How to compress an image to 200 KB (or any size)

Upload forms often reject photos above 200 KB. Here is how to get under the limit while keeping your image clear.

Phone cameras create photos of 2 to 5 MB, but many application forms, job portals and school websites accept only 100 KB, 200 KB or 500 KB. Getting below that limit is usually a combination of two things: compression and smaller dimensions.

The quick way

  1. Open Compress image.
  2. Choose your photo and select the 200 KB target.
  3. Press Compress image and compare the preview with the original.
  4. If the result is still too large, turn on Allow smaller dimensions and try again.

Why dimensions matter

A 12-megapixel photo has about 4000 × 3000 pixels. Squeezing all of that detail into 200 KB forces very strong compression, which causes blocky areas and smudged edges. Most forms display photos at 1000 to 2000 pixels wide, so reducing the dimensions first lets you keep much higher quality at the same file size. Use Resize image to set the width, then compress.

Pick the right format

  • JPG is the best choice for photos and is accepted almost everywhere.
  • PNG is lossless, so it cannot be compressed by quality. Photos saved as PNG are often far too large for upload limits.
  • WebP is smaller than JPG at similar quality, but some forms still do not accept it.

When a form lists several requirements

Some forms ask for a maximum file size, a format and exact dimensions at the same time. Meet an upload limit checks all three, shows the planned changes and confirms each requirement against the final file.

Common mistakes

  • Renaming photo.png to photo.jpg does not convert it. The contents stay PNG.
  • Taking a screenshot of a photo usually makes it larger, not smaller.
  • Compressing the same JPG repeatedly adds visible artefacts each time. Start from the original.
